BASIC RULES OF HORSE BETTING

Horse bettors place their bets on certain numbers assigned to each of the horses on the track. The combined amount of money wagered on a certain bet makes a "pool". This pool amount will be proportionally distributed among those players who correctly predicted the outcome of this particular bet. A certain amount of money in the pool is withheld by the bookmaker (a horsebook) to cover its own costs, taxes and service fees.
Sometimes horses are withdrawn from the race for various reasons (mostly due to injury). These horses are called "scratches" No bets are sold on early "scratches", and in most cases bettors can get refunded on late scratches.
Odds are an estimate of how much a horse will pay to win a race. The odds number (ratio- 3/1, 5/8, 3/5...) tells us about expectations of the bettors. The smallest ratio or the highest amount of money bet on a horse shows the favorite of the race. Payout to winners can be found by multiplying odds ratio by the bet amount and adding the bet amount. For example, odds of 5/1 will pay $30 for a $5 bet.

HORSE BETTING TIPS

First of all, you should do a thorough homework. Analyze the horse racing form, make a research on participating horses, their trainers and jockeys. Pick better horses judging by their recent performances. Information on the past few races is readily available online. The chances are that a horse with a good record is more likely to perform well in the nex race.
Try to choose horses with the odds ratio at least 3 to 1 to make it an attractive choice for an intelligent bettor.
All types of straight bets and the daily double bet have the best winning potential.
Try not to bet on horses which have not participated in raced recently, it may indicate that the horse suffered an injury or illness.
Avoid horses that are new to the race class. It takes time for a horse to get used to the new race setting to start performing well.
Make a well-balanced decision on how well this particular horse suits the required race distance on the given surface. Some horses race better on mud tracks, some race better on grass tracks. Sprinter horses are made for short tracks, other suited better for longer distances.
The longer the racing track, the higher are winning chances for an experienced jockey who is able to properly choose the horse speed for the given race distance. Experienced jockeys are also preferable for obstacle racing.
Sometimes it happens that the favorite horse of the betting crowd falls out of favor during a race due to bookmakers' manipulations. In such cases it is recommended to stay with the initial favorite.
